Kauri
The Kauri tree is New Zealand’s most well known and most loved native tree. Although these huge giants of the forest faced great deforestation during the 19th century, many still stand today as a testimony to their sheer size and volume. It’s no wonder that kauri is viewed by many as a symbol of GREAT STRENGTH.

Puriri
The Puriri is one of few New Zealand natives upon which flowers can be found all year round, though it does flower most heavily over winter. Ripe fruit can also be found all year round, but is more common over the summer. Because the Puriri is able to provide a constant year-round food supply, it is a fitting symbol for SUSTAINABILITY.

Rimu
Rimu is the most widespread of all New Zealand forest trees, occurring throughout the North, South, and Stewart Islands. Although government policies forbid the felling of rimu in public forests, recycled Rimu remains popular for the production of high quality wooden furniture. For these reasons Rimu fits the symbol for PRODUCTIVITY.

Totara
Totara grows to 30 metres in height with a straight trunk up to two metres through and old trees can reach 1,800 years old. Totara wood is extremely durable – with the unique quality of its inability to warp. Framework made with Totora is therefore long lasting. Totara is a true symbol of LONGEVITY.

Matai
The Matai tree has a distinctive and long-lasting juvenile stage. The juvenile is a shrub with a tangle of slender, flexible, branches interspersed with a scattering of leaves. After a number of years, the adult tree begins to grow out of the top of the juvenile shrub and the branches wither and drop off. What a fitting symbol of LASTING YOUTH.

Pohutukawa
The Pohutukawa tree is renowned as a cliff-dweller, able to maintain a hold in precarious, near-vertical situations. Vigorous and easy to grow, the tree flourishes well south of its natural range, and has naturalised in most areas it has been introduced to. A classic symbol for ADAPTABILITY.
